SIPRI applies a standardized definition of military expenditure when calculating each country’s military spending. The definition includes all government expenses dedicated to military purposes: as well as the official defence budget, this can include spending under other budget headings.
This work is largely based around three comprehensive and open-access databases: the Arms transfers database, the Arms industry database and the Military expenditure database.
